What is biodynamic agriculture?

Biodynamic agriculture refers to a specific type of organic farming based on the principles of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner.

Special composts, preparations and plant activators are used in accordance with those principles at Mimsbrook Farm in Western Australia.

Steiner emphasised the simple point that when plants are sick, farmers should look at the soil.

All problems arise from the soil.

By using certified biodynamic agriculture practices, the structure of organisms in the soil is largely left to nature.

This creates a growth medium that is healthy, ensuring that the plants it supports are also healthy.

Since the end of World War II, the chemically-assisted agriculture regime has become the most widely practiced and is known as "conventional" agriculture.

However, it is now recognised that this is not sustainable agriculture.

Biodynamic farming is turning the tables on convention by proving its methods are sustainable.

Biodynamics does not use herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, antibiotics or growth-promoting hormones.

It does not mono crop, instead ensuring there is a healthy cycle of natural crop rotation.

The certified biodynamic farming method should not be regarded merely as a method of manuring the land.

The biodynamic approach is based on an understanding through anthroposophy of the interrelationships of living organisms and the processes that make up the ecological system.

That relationship embraces the forces working within plants, the soil and from the surrounding universe.

At its core is a substance called "500" which is made from cow manure buried for months in cow horns before being mixed with water and spread on the land to reactivate lifeless soil.

It is a process that redeems dead soils and makes farms viable. It is a labour-intensive process carried out by committed and socially responsible farmers.

The organic fruit and vegetables grown in this medium are distinguished by their excellent flavor, durability and high food value.

Many other food products promote these benefits but people who have experienced the taste and freshness of certified biodynamic fruit and vegetables know it is far superior.
